Bayern Munich were trailing 0-1 to Wolfsburg in the 23rd minute of a Bundesliga game on 22 September 2015 before Lewandowski, introduced in the second half, scored five goals in the space of nine minutes (51, 52, 55, 57 and 60) to lead the Bavarians to a 5-1 win over the Wolves in a game the Polish striker will never forget.
‘I know I scored a lot of goals but Thomas Müller pushed me towards the fans after the game and I asked, ‘Why?’ Okay, we won and I scored a lot of goals but I don’t think I made any history.’
‘In those nine minutes I thought I was somewhere else. I wasn’t thinking about how many minutes I had or how many goals I had scored. When I scored the first goal I thought, ‘Okay, 1-1, you have to score the second goal.’ When I scored the second goal I thought, ‘Okay, you have to score the third goal and we will win for sure.”
‘Then I scored the third, fourth and fifth, but I don’t think I scored that many goals yet because I’m looking for the next opportunity.’
‘Scoring five goals in nine minutes, because the numbers ‘five and nine minutes’ is a big thing and will stay in my memory for the rest of my life,’ Lewandowski said.
